HTML 4.0 is the main formatting layout of the web. HTML 4.1 and XHTML are nearly the same as HTML 4.0 in sytax and usage. All of which are W3C recommendations.

JavaScript is THE programming language of the web. Since most web designers are not programmers, Javascript provides a light-weight programming language to make their webpages more interactive. JavaScript is also a W3C recommendation.
